Would you like to contribute to NAVPA 2017?
If so, it is our pleasure to invite you to submit a session proposal for the National Association of Veterans’ Program Administrators (NAVPA) 2017 Annual Conference, October 23—26, at Caesars Hotel and Casino on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The 75-minute breakout sessions will thematically address challenges, best practices, and/or proposed solutions. It is our goal to generate a wide variety of actionable resolutions that will improve programming and services for the veteran/military affiliated student population we serve.
Proposals should describe: the challenge or challenges, you are seeking to address, actionable items (if any), proposed solutions to share and discussion topics, or a participatory exercise, to generate innovative solutions. We are seeking proposals in the following categories to support the 2017 theme:
School Certifying Official (SCO) Challenges and Best Practices
Identify and address some of the common challenges facing SCO duties and certification of educational benefits. These challenges may include: proposed policy changes, mitigating student debt letters, internal audits, reporting and communication challenges.
Campus Program Challenges
Identify challenges with engaging veteran/military affiliated students and other key stakeholders on or off campus. Challenges may include: communicating with commuter students, low turn-out, new student orientations, on-campus events, staying relevant, veteran/military affiliated student retention, and engaging/training staff and faculty.
Community Collaboration Opportunities
Identify collaboration opportunities and collaboration best practices. Opportunities may include working with entities both on and off campus such as other Veterans’ Services Organizations (VSO’s), local government offices, and neighboring colleges. Some opportunities that will be discussed are collaborating and coordinating with: local mental health resources, engaging local VA, identifying and vetting quality VSO’s, and teaming up with other colleges and universities.
Leadership Challenges & Academic Success
Identify leadership challenges such as: creating buy-in from stakeholders, inspiring senior leadership, effectively leading a Veterans Department, addressing campus concerns, anticipating, influencing and leading change. How can we help our veteran/military affiliated students with their academic success?
